Salted Caramel Hummingbird Cake

December 8, 2014

So since being back in the country and starting my job, I have been buzzing on this high of life-winning. My recipes for Tasti went live and I have just started writing proper restaurant reviews for Concrete Playground. All this winning luckily gave me a bit of a shield as having McHottie give me the flick the day after I got back didn't put that much of a damper on this buzz.

Christmas Cake Mini Loaves

November 30, 2014

It would seem in the time I have been away, Christmas has thrust itself upon us. I better start wrapping up my gifts of eternal love and gratitude for my family members as I am currently broke. Happy but broke.

For the die hard enthusiasts, the Christmas cake would have already begun its journey of steeping in strong liquors many moons ago. For those of you like myself who are less onto it, this recipe is for you.

Cherry Ripe Truffles

October 27, 2014

Forgive me! I know it is still October and way too early for Christmassy treats but hear me out!

A few weeks ago I missed out on a dream job NPD at Tasti yet somehow I managed to leave the interview process having sparked the interest of their marketing team in their lead up to Christmas.

Ginger Crunch (with extra ginger and extra crunch)

October 23, 2014

My week (and a bit) in summary:

  • I signed on the dotted line for an epic new job and resigned from my first ever big kid job,
  • I prepped for my trip to Asia next week,
  • The section I contribute to in Critic Te Arohi won best lifestyle section at the National Student Media Awards,
  • I went on a date with a mega McHottie,
  • I made some ginger crunch.

Raspberry and Custard Doughnuts

October 7, 2014

I wanted to talk about chivalry. Not the door opening, bag carrying chivalry, but the chivalry that involves giving people the respect they deserve.

I always have a bitch and a moan about how some guys are dicks and treat girls so badly. One minute they are all over you then the next they suddenly stop talking to you and become incredibly elusive for no reason. I get so frustrated by their rudeness and lack of balls to just tell ladies the truth.

Here I was being all woe is me, boys are so awful, why am I perpetually attracted to emotion-phobes and dick heads? Then I stopped and for the first time I looked at my own actions.

Custard Filled Chocolate Eclairs

September 28, 2014

Having power walked and chugged my way through a vegan protein smoothie (don't you worry I'm not converting!) with my excellent friend Sophie this morning, I found myself home alone with only my thoughts to keep me company. I resorted to vacuuming my car for the first time ever (seriously I had a quarry's worth of stones under my floor mat) and then washing it (with dishwashing liquid - desperate times people). After I was soaked head to toe I then proceeded to marinate some chicken for dinner. Having another two hours before people arrived back home I then found myself piping out eclair batter onto a baking tray.

Political Newbieism (and a side of pulled pork sliders)

September 16, 2014

Feeling stressed about who to entrust your vote with this year? Don't worry, you are not alone.

The bullshit that politicians throw at each other seems to thicken in consistency with each election year. Friends become enemies over the course of heated Facebook comment debates and no one party can satisfy your main concerns, leaving you in a pit of personal turmoil.

Lemon Syrup Loaf

August 29, 2014

New Zealand Fashion Week. I am so glad you are over now.

My Instagram feed can’t take it anymore. Zambesi this, Stolen Girlfriends Club that. I’m just sitting here in some old frayed Glassons shorts that are held together with a safety pin feeling like a hobo. Not even a cool hobo but like an actual poor person.

Banana and Chocolate Loaf

August 16, 2014

I went to Countdown the other day with my Mum and as we were walking out of the check outs I saw a familiar face. I shouted out her name across a couple of counters like she was a best friend who I hadn’t seen in a month or so. I asked her how the ball she went to last night was. It was only when it took her a couple of seconds for her to recognize me did I realise that the familiarity I thought I felt was purely because of her presence on social media. I had seen her life fold out via countless photos and tags. I felt like I had been there every step of the way. I knew where she had been and what she had been doing. Which is really kind of creepy.

Vanilla Birthday Cake with White Chocolate Buttercream (and the curse of the overthink)

August 5, 2014

Girls. A good proportion of us I bet are over thinkers.

If only the male species had an insight into the conversations that my flat of all women has. I feel like they would learn a lot about this so called complex female mind that is such a mystery to them (they would probably be surprised at how frequently the topic of sex comes up). Recently conversation has been directed towards early communication upon meeting someone new and how frustrating it can be.

Recipe number 40 is rather special. A week ago today Nana left this earth. To celebrate her life we all gathered in Matamata and of course there was afternoon tea. The Aunties and I all made something of hers. I was on cheesecakes. Welsh cheesecakes
Dylan and I made this @katherine_sabbath stunner yesterday to celebrate Chris’ birthday. Needless to say it went down an absolute treat 🍳🌽🍡
Apologies for the crap photos but I’d like to share the recipe for this family favourite. I’ve written about Dad’s favourite veggie casserole over on TheSupperClubKitchen.com under recipes worth sharing. It’s 90s nostalgia at
We’ve always seen making our own croissants as a pretty daunting task. I feel like there is a lot of mystique around their making that only trained experts can get their heads around. Since we had little else to do we (Dylan) decided to give ma

@bonappetitmag’s best ever bread recipe. It only took us three days but we’re here. Having this tonight with Ima’s chicken soup. Just call me Henny Penny.
