Auckland Eats: La Cigale French Market

September 20, 2014

My brother Jack and I often go on sibling dates. They always involve food. It is a mutual enthusiasm of ours. His more the eating of it though. Having it been the morning after pay day I was feeling particularly rich so we decided to descend upon Parnell to taste the wares of this delightful French Market. I used the excuse of it being the day before Jack's birthday to justify all the food we stuffed into our faces. We left in a euphoric cheese and croissant coma and the attempt at exercise that had participated in that morning totally undone.

I looked upon the raw and paelo stands with good intentions but the calls of the meaty paella and the custard filled cronut were too strong.

I have noticed the deli sandwich has started to become a bit of a booming food trend in Auckland. Rueben sandwiches, gourmet hotdogs, croque-monsieurs and not to forget all the delicious burgers filling up the counters and bellies of trendy kids everywhere. I tried my first croque-monsieur here and it was love at first bite. I sort of wanted to die after eating it but that's true love right? Sometimes it's painful? This experience inspired me to make my own so watch this space!

Located on St Georges Bay Road in Parnell and held every Saturday morning between 8am-1.30pm and Sunday 9am-1.30pm, it is definitely worth making a special trip for if you haven't already. It isn't the cheapest of markets (it is Parnell after all) but every stand has its own EFTPOS machine so you don't have to worry about rummaging for that last fifty cents needed for that green kale protein smoothie. Recipe number 40 is rather special. A week ago today Nana left this earth. To celebrate her life we all gathered in Matamata and of course there was afternoon tea. The Aunties and I all made something of hers. I was on cheesecakes. Welsh cheesecakes
Dylan and I made this @katherine_sabbath stunner yesterday to celebrate Chris’ birthday. Needless to say it went down an absolute treat 🍳🌽🍡
Apologies for the crap photos but I’d like to share the recipe for this family favourite. I’ve written about Dad’s favourite veggie casserole over on TheSupperClubKitchen.com under recipes worth sharing. It’s 90s nostalgia at
We’ve always seen making our own croissants as a pretty daunting task. I feel like there is a lot of mystique around their making that only trained experts can get their heads around. Since we had little else to do we (Dylan) decided to give ma
Proud as punch for actually completing
@bonappetitmag’s best ever bread recipe. It only took us three days but we’re here. Having this tonight with Ima’s chicken soup. Just call me Henny Penny.
Dylan put some words together about the long lunch we cooked ourselves last weekend. You can find it over on thesupperclubkitchen.com
