Auckland Eats: Royal Dumpling, Royal Oak

September 24, 2014

I probably should be doing life admin right now. I probably should have had eggs on toast to save time in order to do more life admin. But no, I went and gorged myself on the best dumplings in my area, pretended to do some work, then procrastinated further and wrote this.

My colleague at work strolled in after lunch one day and proclaimed that he had found the best dumpling house around. When he said it was in Royal Oak (ie dangerously close to my house) I raced off at once to see for myself the greatness.

Was it great or what! The lacklustre décor, the laminated menu cards, the square table layout and the awful plates with clovers printed on them; it was the perfect setting to be served up a massive steamer of pork and cabbage dumplings.

It was so great I went there again the next day, this time with my excellent friend Alix. $14.80 later, both of us were suffering food comas (we aren’t the daintiest of lasses either) and were very happy indeed.

So far we have tried the pork and cabbage steamed dumplings and the barbecue pork buns. Other tables were receiving these crazy steaming fire urns of something wonderful looking. I felt really awkward staring at neighbouring families as they took apart their meal but I just couldn’t help myself! I wish I understood what the menu said a little more. I might just close my eyes and point next time and see what treats I get delivered.

The service was reasonable and the staff polite and friendly. The food came out in under 15 minutes and steaming hot. With some of the best value for money I have seen in a while I am somewhat terrified at the number of times I see Miss Alix and I going there over the next few months.

Recipe number 40 is rather special. A week ago today Nana left this earth. To celebrate her life we all gathered in Matamata and of course there was afternoon tea. The Aunties and I all made something of hers. I was on cheesecakes. Welsh cheesecakes
Dylan and I made this @katherine_sabbath stunner yesterday to celebrate Chris’ birthday. Needless to say it went down an absolute treat 🍳🌽🍡
Apologies for the crap photos but I’d like to share the recipe for this family favourite. I’ve written about Dad’s favourite veggie casserole over on TheSupperClubKitchen.com under recipes worth sharing. It’s 90s nostalgia at
We’ve always seen making our own croissants as a pretty daunting task. I feel like there is a lot of mystique around their making that only trained experts can get their heads around. Since we had little else to do we (Dylan) decided to give ma
Proud as punch for actually completing
@bonappetitmag’s best ever bread recipe. It only took us three days but we’re here. Having this tonight with Ima’s chicken soup. Just call me Henny Penny.
Dylan put some words together about the long lunch we cooked ourselves last weekend. You can find it over on thesupperclubkitchen.com
