Soda Water Date Scones (plus some other ingredients)

October 25, 2017

I first wrote about these date scones yonks ago. This was back when I had an iPhone 4 as a camera and long before having an eclectic and staged array of objects in the frame was fashionable. Recently I've made it my mission to write a cookbook and whilst my new images are no where near suitable it forces me to double check the recipes that I hold most dear. It also means Dylan's work gets a lot of morning tea.

That Chocolate Cake I Always Make

June 15, 2016

I've received some rather lovely messages from friends but also random strangers about recipes they've made from my site and how much they and their friends have loved them. My scones apparently won a friend of mine a cheeky pash on top of One Tree Hill. I use my blog a lot, it is a handy online record of all the recipes I love so when I am out at the supo and wondering what on earth goes into something all I have to do is use The Google.

One such recipe I find myself ego surfing on is the basic but foolproof chocolate cake recipe. I've been vowing to post a simplified version with a single recipe of buttercream for people who are after a modest but always reliable cake.

Orange Almond Syrup Cake

March 24, 2016

So I made this cake originally for Shine's Orange Friday appeal where we raffled it off and made $167.50 to help support the victims of domestic abuse in New Zealand. See, sharing is caring! I found myself making it again for when the boyfriend's parents came over to meet my parents for the first time. Its a good one for sure when you don't feel like making a complicated cake or faffing around with icing one.

Dylan's Risotto (the best risotto of my life)

January 25, 2016

A young man made me food. Not just any food either, my favourite food. I was made the most delicious risotto of my life. To top it all off the man making it has the most excellent face I've ever seen as well. So much win in one go.

Ricotta and Boysenberry Cake

October 23, 2015

I swapped a small bag of juicy lemons for a kilo of ricotta the other day. These are the sorts of underground dealings that I dabble in.

Karaage Chicken

October 20, 2015

Adulting. I hate it. I really do.

Sophie you should start saving real money. Sophie you need to think about your career. Sophie you don't really want to still be single when you're 30, all the good ones will be taken then.

I made friends with a flat of boys recently. They committed the ultimate 'anti-adulthood' act the other day. They bought a deep-fryer from Kmart for $35.

Vanilla Cupcakes

August 25, 2015

I am officially the world's worst sick person. I now fully understand my grandmother's frustration when she isn't allowed to help around the kitchen on Christmas Day.

Recipe number 40 is rather special. A week ago today Nana left this earth. To celebrate her life we all gathered in Matamata and of course there was afternoon tea. The Aunties and I all made something of hers. I was on cheesecakes. Welsh cheesecakes
Dylan and I made this @katherine_sabbath stunner yesterday to celebrate Chris’ birthday. Needless to say it went down an absolute treat 🍳🌽🍡
Apologies for the crap photos but I’d like to share the recipe for this family favourite. I’ve written about Dad’s favourite veggie casserole over on TheSupperClubKitchen.com under recipes worth sharing. It’s 90s nostalgia at
We’ve always seen making our own croissants as a pretty daunting task. I feel like there is a lot of mystique around their making that only trained experts can get their heads around. Since we had little else to do we (Dylan) decided to give ma

@bonappetitmag’s best ever bread recipe. It only took us three days but we’re here. Having this tonight with Ima’s chicken soup. Just call me Henny Penny.
